Eligibility criteria for USMLE exam

So, you have completed your years at medical school and now planning to write a USMLE exam. Well, do you know there is an eligibility criterion every student joining the USMLE step exam training must follow? If you don’t, here in this post, we’ll explain the USMLE eligibility criteria. 

USMLE - United States Medical Licensing Examination includes three steps, including Step1, Step2 (CK and CS) and Step 3, and each step has different criteria. The eligibility criteria also vary for the USA and Canada aspirants, and the international aspirants. 

The USA and Canada aspirants can apply through USMLE, whereas the international aspirants should process their USMLE application through ECFMG. 


The USMLE eligibility criteria for Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 is explained below:

USMLE Step 1 Eligibility Criteria - According to the eligibility criteria laid by USMLE, the foreign medical students living outside the USA and Canada, must be enrolled in or graduated from a medical school given in the World Directory Medical Schools list. They should meet the requirements of the ECFMG - Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, certification eligibility criteria. If an international aspirant wants to join a residency program in the USA, he/she must be assessed by the ECFMG. 

USMLE Step 2 Eligibility Criteria 
  • The aspirant should be either enrolled or a graduate of a medical school in an international country other than the USA and Canada. 
  • The medical school must be present in the World Directory of Medical Schools list. 
  • The candidate must meet the ECFMG certification eligibility criteria.
USMLE Step 3 Eligibility Criteria 
  • The aspirant must have cleared USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (CK and CS)
  • He or she must have an MD or DO from LCME- or AOA and should be accredited medical school in the USA and Canada.
  • The MD or DO equivalent degree must be obtained by a medical school, listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
If you’re a medical graduate and interested in practicing medicine in the USA and Canada, taking USMLE - the United States Medical Licensing Examination is crucial. This exam is usually conducted in three steps - Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3.
