Residency training program: Application requirements for foreign students

So, you have completed your graduate program in the medical and now planning to practice medicine in the United States. To do so, you must complete a residency training program in the US, no matter what type of training you’ve received. If you’re an international medical graduate and have already got yourself enrolled in medical residency training in New York or searching for a medical school, you should know that this program may take 3 years to complete.

However, before you get yourself involved in the residency training program, it is important to know the requirements and eligibility criteria.

Who qualifies for a residency program?

If you’re a foreign national who has completed medical graduation and has received a visa, you are qualified for a medical residency training program in the United States. However, before you apply for a residency training program, it is highly recommended that you take part in an observership rotation in any clinical setting. This will help you understand the clinical practice settings and build connections with physicians so that they can give you reference during the process. 

Choosing the right residency training program - It is advisable to choose a residency program that meets your goals and needs. An internal residency program usually includes 4 tracks, such as transitional, preliminary, categorical and primary care. 
  • Transitional program - Although a transitional program is considered as a one-year training, it fails to provide sufficient credits for 2nd year of training.
  • Preliminary program - This type of program is designed for those who want to specialize and require one year of training.
  • Categorical program - When it comes to categorical programs, they are more hospital-based and are usually 3 years programs. 
  • Primary care program - Only students who are sure to work as a generalist should apply for primary care program. 
How to obtain a medical residency? 

To obtain a medical residency, foreign medical graduates are required to file applications to at least 25 programs, so that the chances of being matched for a medical residency program are more. For this, the candidates are required to get them registered with the National Residency Matching Program. This is a body that matches the hospital residency programs and applicants as per their needs and preferences.
